China will Censor Internet During Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Chinese government confirmed Wednesday what free-speech advocates loathe to hear: Reporters covering the Olympic Games won’t be able to access Web sites that China deems politically sensitive.Internet censorship is standard for China’s citizens, but China vowed seven years ago to allow journalists unfettered access during the Olympics. The backpedaling means about 20,000 reporters and technicians that will flood Beijing next week for the Olympic Games will be working with a handicap.

“The Olympic committee should have understood in the first place that censorship is a core strategy the Chinese government uses to maintain control. The IOC was naive to think China would relinquish that control, if only for a week,” said Leslie Harris, president and CEO of the Center for Democracy and Technology. “It is very disappointing. I am as disappointed in the IOC as I am in China.”

VMWare Gives Away ESXi To Manage Virtual Servers

To spur the adoption of virtualization Relevant Products/Services, VMware is offering its stand-alone ESXi hypervisor for free. ESXi was built to run virtual machines, minimizing configuration Relevant Products/Services requirements and simplifying deployment, according to the company.Leading server manufacturers have all embedded ESXi, including Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Hitachi, HP, IBM and NEC.

“Virtualization is one of the most impactful trends in computing,” said Gartner Vice President Distinguished Analyst Tom Bittman. “The availability of free hypervisors will undoubtedly grow the market and provide a compelling reason for companies that have not virtualized their environment to begin doing so. This is especially true for small to medium business customers and customers in emerging markets.”

British UFO Hacker Ordered Extradited to US

Britain’s top court on Wednesday refused to block the extradition of a British hacker accused of breaking into military and NASA computers in the U.S. The accused hacker says he broke into the systems on a quest for information about UFOs.Gary McKinnon, 42, faces charges in the U.S. for a series of alleged cyberattacks. He allegedly stole passwords, attacked military networks, and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in computer damage.

Britain’s House of Lords, the equivalent of the U.S. Supreme Court, handed down the decision. It was McKinnon’s last hope in British courts to avoid extradition to the U.S. for trial. However, the Associated Press reported that McKinnon’s attorney plans to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.
