Sony Finally Drops DRM, Sort Of

In yet another move toward the day when copyright protection will be a distant memory in the digital music industry, Sony BMG hopped on the Digital Rights Management-free bandwagon on Monday.Sony launched Platinum MusicPass, a series of digital album cards that will enable consumers to download full-length albums and bonus content in a high-quality MP3 format. The cards will be priced at $12.99, which will include the complete digital album plus bonus material.

The first 37 titles in the series, which represent musical genres ranging from rock and pop to R&B and country, will debut Jan. 15. By the end of the month the program will be available at 4,500 retail outlets across the United States, and will debut in Canada.

Skype Comes to PlayStation Portable

In a week of consumer electronics madness, Sony announced it is introducing Skype features to its recently refreshed PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld entertainment system.Skype offers free VoIP Relevant Products/Services services and boasts more than 246 million members. The PSP-Skype partnership will offer gamers free voice calls between Skype users, presence features that let them see which friends are online and available to talk, SkypeOut calls to make calls to landlines and mobile phones anywhere in the world, and other standard Skype services.

“We don’t know beyond a shadow of a doubt if Skype will be successful on a PSP,” said Michael Goodman, a Yankee Group analyst. “We do know there has been some success with Skype on mobile devices. The PSP is a mobile device.”
