Report: Facebook Targeting Companies, Developers

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Facebook is bucking the acquisition trend and looking for ways to reach the big leagues on its own. Facebook will reportedly make a major announcement later this week at the Facebook F8 event in San Francisco. The Journal claims the announcement will feature the launch of what’s called the “Facebook Platform,” a new tool that aims to transform Facebook from a social-networking site for college kids to an open platform that any service provider can leverage.

Facebook could not immediately be reached for comment, but the Journal said the MySpace competitor hopes the new service will allow users to “gain access to that content inside Facebook.” The idea, in a nutshell, is to reach out to developers and companies in what could become personalized homepages, much like what Yahoo offers, and recommendation services similar to Amazon.com’s.

Yahoo has its homegrown social-networking play called Yahoo 360, but company officials have publicly admitted that it has failed to generate the anticipated traction in a competitive marketplace.

If the Bebo rumors turn out to be accurate, it would be Yahoo’s second attempt in a year to buy its way into social networking. The company reportedly attempted to buy Facebook for $1 billion last year, but the start-up was unwilling to sell, even at the billion-dollar mark.
