Yahoo might be coming to the party a little late, but the search prince has finally shown up with a Web-based version of its instant-messaging application to compete with rivals Google and Microsoft
.Yahoo released the Web-based version of its messaging tool on Wednesday. The new offering lets chatters use Yahoo Messenger through any Web browser and allows users to search current and archived messages.
“Yahoo Messenger for the Web offers functions that the downloaded version does not,” the company said in a statement. “Consumers can, for example, maintain multiple conversations in one window with different tabs instead of opening up chats in multiple windows.”

On Wednesday, Microsoft
took the wraps off a new line of infrastructure management and security
tools designed to help businesses protect I.T. environments. But some of the software giant’s competitors are not so sure Redmond has the answer.The new Forefront Client Security software is designed to deliver visibility into threats and vulnerabilities through a central management console. It integrates with another new Microsoft product, System Center Essentials 2007, as well as Active Directory services.
“Customers are under increasing pressure to manage the complexity of today’s business environment while protecting information against an ever-evolving array of threats,” Microsoft Senior Vice President Bob Muglia said in a statement. Muglia is betting Redmond’s products will help companies overcome some of the challenges associated with protecting I.T. environments.
