HP Debuts Business-Class Smartphone
At the 3GSM conference in Barcelona, HP
introduced a new model in its iPAQ line in a bid to compete in a corporate market largely dominated by Research In Motion and Palm. The HP iPAQ 500 Voice Messenger features VoIP capabilities, push e-mail, and the latest Windows Mobile 6 operating system. HP said it hopes the device, which follows the general mobile industry trend toward more consumer-friendly smartphones, will boost its market share.
HP held a mere 1 percent of the smartphone market in 2006, according to research firm IDC, with phones that offered full Qwerty keyboards. The new slimmer, 12-key model looks more like the designs business consumers are already opting for with BlackBerries and Treos.
