Will Apple Charge for Boot Camp?

Last week, many Apple users were up in arms over the Mac-maker’s decision to charge $5 to unlock 802.11n Wi-Fi software on Intel-based laptops. This week, there’s a new public debate over the notion of having to pay $30 for software that lets Intel-based Macs run Windows.MacScoop, an online publication devoted to Apple enthusiasts, claims to have inside information that Apple will charge OS X Tiger users $29.99 for the final version of Boot Camp. Boot Camp reportedly will be a standard feature in Leopard, Apple’s next major release of OS X that is scheduled to debut this spring.

“It’s not unusual to see a free beta go into a public release at a price,” said Tim Deal, a senior analyst with Pike & Fischer. “At $30, Boot Camp is a steal. That’s a drop in the bucket for software that allows for a dual operating system.”

Key Linux Foundations Set To Merge

As Microsoft prepares to release Windows Vista to the masses, disparate Linux camps are banding together to prepare a counterattack. The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) is merging with the Free Standards Group (FSG) to form The Linux Foundation.The goal of the new group is to streamline efforts and help the open-source operating system compete more effectively against proprietary platforms. Former FSG Executive Director Jim Zemlin will lead the new foundation.

Community groups, universities, and industry players — including HP, Hitachi, Fujitsu, IBM, Intel, Novell, NEC, and Oracle — are coming together under the new flag.
