Will Apple Charge for Boot Camp?
Last week, many Apple users were up in arms over the Mac-maker’s decision to charge $5 to unlock 802.11n Wi-Fi software on Intel-based laptops. This week, there’s a new public debate over the notion of having to pay $30 for software that lets Intel-based Macs run Windows.MacScoop, an online publication devoted to Apple enthusiasts, claims to have inside information that Apple will charge OS X Tiger users $29.99 for the final version of Boot Camp. Boot Camp reportedly will be a standard feature in Leopard, Apple’s next major release of OS X that is scheduled to debut this spring.
“It’s not unusual to see a free beta go into a public release at a price,” said Tim Deal, a senior analyst with Pike & Fischer. “At $30, Boot Camp is a steal. That’s a drop in the bucket for software that allows for a dual operating system.”
