It’s an altogether different thing when someone mangles an entire story – especially when it is the story about your business. You can have the most compelling, dramatic, winning sales story on the planet, but if you fail to communicate it to your employees, customers and investors then it may as well be a bad joke. What are the elements of good story telling? Informing, entertaining and persuading make a good start. Your goal is ultimately to inform your audience about your company, its product or service, and persuade them that it is the best thing since low-carb sliced bread. But in order to get and maintain their attention, you might need to throw in a little butter in the form of entertainment. Entertainment can mean different things to different audiences. While there is no need to be flippant, or even tell jokes, even the most sophisticated audiences enjoy an engaging tone over stale, dry communications – especially on the web. So loosen up your tie and, when it’s appropriate, go ahead and add some garlic butter to your message instead of serving up dry toast that sends your customers looking for a glass of water at your competitor’s shop.
